The More You Crave This Common Food Additive, The Faster Your Brain Dissolves
Dementia rates are rising and brain researchers are starting to connect the epidemic to our food. So what exactly are we eating that is causing us to lose our minds right around the age we were supposed to be able to finally kick back and enjoy ourselves?
BY CAROLYN HANSEN

By the time you reach middle age your brain is already shrinking.

This means that if you are 45 years of age or older your brain is getting smaller by the day - an imperceptible but continuous deficit that has important ramifications for your later years.

The process kicks off whether or not it becomes amplified by the action of those harmless-looking tiny white crystals.

The ones being powdered and mixed into 80 percent of the food supply. You likely consumed at least a spoonful of this substance within the last 24 hours, if not a great deal more than that...

But wait a minute, you may be thinking to yourself. Brain shrinkage?

Is that the same as dementia? And isn't dementia supposed to be an old age disease? My parents may be old. I'm not.

The worrying truth is that brain shrinkage IS indeed associated with dementia.

And when it comes to age-related disease, your brain may be older than you think...

Alzheimer's disease in particular, which accounts for 70 percent of all cases of dementia (memory loss and other cognitive impairment), is a direct result of brain shrinkage. If you fall victim to the disease as much as two-thirds of your brain can vanish.

What Your Doctor Might Have Warned You About Your Aging Brain - If He Had The Time To Chat
Never mind those dementia statistics you hear in which your 65th year seems to be the dividing line between the part of your life when clear thinking can be taken for granted and the part when your mind may just begin to unravel.

Many brain health experts believe the neurodegenerative processes responsible for Alzheimer's disease can get started decades before you even notice the first symptoms (such as memory loss, confusion, and impaired learning).

Almost as unsettling is that shrinkage takes place even in the complete ABSENCE of disease. Healthy brains do deflate over time, although there are reliable ways to stem the damage.

This means that if you are closer to retirement than the age your first born heads off to college then your brain has been pulling away from your skull and collapsing in on itself for more than two decades...

If you were married to an MRI brain imaging specialist you would know all about the implications of shrinkage.

Or perhaps if your physician had the time to spare you would be taken aside and shown the latest research. Then you would know all about...
Life Expectancy For Brains Beyond The Age Of 40
You would know that even though your grey matter (brain cells) slowly reduce in volume for the remainder of your life from about the age of 10 years, for some parts of your brain the shrinkage is more pronounced with age.

Indeed, by the time you hit the "big four oh" your brain is past its prime and well into a state of decline.
even healthy brains shrink with age

Perhaps surprisingly, most of this midlife brain shrinkage is NOT the result of brain cell loss, as it is with Alzheimer's disease. Nor will it cause any serious cognitive impairment by the time you begin noticing strands of gray hair in the mirror.

In fact, if you treat your brain well there is NO reason to think you cannot remain mentally sharp and socially productive right up until your final year of life.

You can think of this as the silver lining in a story about the poisoning of your brain in which you turn out to be both the unsuspecting victim and the villain.

On the one hand I will be giving you the bad news about how you could be eating your way to dementia. On the other hand, once you know what it is you are doing that is significantly accelerating the shrinkage of your brain you can simply stop doing it.
So, If Part Of Your Brain Is Disappearing...
Where Is It Going?
If even a healthy brain shrinks, but this is mostly not the result of neurons (brain cells) dying, then what is the cause?

Careful studies involving counts of individual neurons have shown that most of the shrinkage in a healthy brain is actually due to the disappearance of connecting tissue that links one brain cell to thousands of others.

These connections are used to store new information, recall existing information (memory), and help in the flow of ideas required to reason your way through the myriad of circumstances that challenge you over the course of a day.
dendrite pruning leads to brains shrinkage

You can see how losing your mental wiring could eventually lead to cognitive issues - memory being the most easily recognizable: the misplaced car keys, the word on the tip of your tongue you cannot retrieve, the missed parent teacher night you swore you would not forget!

When the thin connective filaments responsible for messaging between individual brain cells (the dendrites) fall into disuse they weaken like unused muscles and eventually unplug. It is all part of the regular aging process.

What's not so normal is the accelerated brain shrinkage which actually IS a result of brain cell death. This is where those tiny crystals of common sugar enter the picture...
Pure, White And Deadly On Your Brain
If you had already guessed that sugar is the neuro-toxin many brain scientists have begun to connect with the world-wide epidemic of dementia today you may also know that these same researchers often refer to Alzheimer's disease as "Type 3 Diabetes".

In other words the death of brain cells has as one of its chief suspects high blood sugar. The irony is that your brain thrives on sugar as its primary fuel source.

But when we take in too much sugar from our regular diet there can be unexpected and potentially harmful consequences...

One of these is the development of cerebral small-vessel disease (CSVD). The smaller blood vessels that nourish brain tissue become clogged or sprout leaks. The result is that parts of your brain can become starved of oxygen, nutrients and fuel. Or they undergo hemorrhage-induced brain cell damage.

This is known to lead to:
  • Cognitive decline
  • Depression
  • Problems with walking or balance
  • Vascular dementia (and strokes)
In one brain study of 60 to 90 year olds (The Rotterdam Scan Study) the consequences of cerebral small-vessel disease were found in 95 percent of the study participants.

The role of sugar in the development of small-vessel disease can be traced back to research begun in the late 1950s in an area entirely unrelated to brain health. Sugar metabolism was studied in an attempt to better understand the cause of heart disease.

You might be surprised to learn that this ubiquitous sweetener, found in practically all processed foods, and not saturated (animal) fat is the key driver of high cholesterol.

Moreover, it is the build up of this cholesterol as plaque on the inner surface of your blood vessels which drives much of the cardiovascular disease, stroke incidence, and now (it is thought) the brain shrinkage that manifests as Alzheimer's disease.
The Prophetic Warning About Sugar From The Mild-Mannered Scientist The World Ignored
John Yukin was a British professor at the University of London's Queen Elizabeth College. He was also the UK's leading nutritionist of the day. For more than a decade he studied the effect of sugar metabolism on the human body.

What turned up in his research so alarmed Yudkin that in 1972 he wrote a book to warn us about it.

It was called Pure, White And Deadly.

Plain table sugar, and not saturated fat, Yudkin told the world, was the true underlying cause of the cholesterol-induced heart disease epidemic of the day.

"If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed in relation to any other material used as a food additive," wrote Yudkin, "that material would promptly be banned."

His declaration horrified the sugar industry which sprang into action to defend itself. The British Sugar Bureau declared Yudkin's work not scientific, but "emotional". The World Sugar Research Organisation dismissed his book as "science fiction".

Whenever he published a paper showing that sugar was bad for the general public, the sugar industry responded by putting out a paper which claimed the exact opposite...
In the 1970s John Yukin was concerned that Americans were eating 100 pounds of sugar every year. He believed 4 pounds was a much safer limit.
The sugar industry won. The world forgot Yudkin and his claims. But he turned out to be correct. And in the years since he raised his concerns, this realization - that it is sugar which drives cholesterol - has had huge implications for brain health.

Because in addition to clogging up the fine blood vessels of your brain with inflammation-causing atherosclerotic (cholesterol) plaques, high levels of sugar in the blood cause free-floating proteins to stick together so that they are no longer able to perform their proper biological function.

In a sense those sticky proteins are like the caramelized goo you get when you heat sugar. But trapped in the narrow confines of the blood vessels of your brain they can cause further neurological strife - the kind of vascular damage that leads to blocked vessels, leaky vessels, and strokes of every size that rob areas of your brain of vital oxygen and nutrients.

Your risk of vascular dementia goes up.

So too does your risk of Alzheimer's - the shrinking brain disease - as brain cells die off in response to the damage.

It does not matter whether you are ever formally diagnosed with diabetes or not. As long as your blood sugar is higher than your doctor would recommend it be it is likely doing damage to your brain.
How To Avoid Having Your Brain Dissolve Decades Before You Are Done Using It...

So Yudkin was correct when he said that sugar is pure, white and deadly. He just did not realize at the time that the dangers of a high-carbohydrate (sugar-driven) diet for the health of the human heart also applied equally to the human brain.

Unfortunately this realization is still largely unappreciated. Few people connect their fear of losing their mind prematurely with the increased risk of this happening which comes about as a result of the food they are eating.

When you sit down for breakfast and pour yourself a sugar-laden bowl of cereal you are not likely to be wondering about the effect it might have on your mental processes 20 years from now. But it would be a good idea to start doing that.
